Calling hours Monday for fallen soldier

BURLINGTON FLATS, N.Y. (WKTV) - A fallen soldier is honored, one week after the incident that claimed his life. Calling hours for fallen Burlington Flats soldier Michael Mayne will begin Monday afternoon at 2 p.m.

Monday's services are one of several happening this week, giving a small Otsego County Community time to say goodbye.

Members of the Burlington Flats and Edmeston area communities will gather with heavy hearts at the Burlington Flats Baptist Church shortly - each with a chance to pay their respects to a man they already had the utmost respect for.

Mayne, 21, was killed by insurgents near Baghdad one week ago. His body returned home Sunday and was met with dozens of residents from the small Otsego County village.

Many were silent, carrying flags, as the hearse passed through his home town. Friends say they are still stunned by Mayne's death, but are trying to remember the great things Mike was known for.

"He just wanted to see you smile, he just wanted to see you happy," said Mark Johnson, a friend of Mayne's. "And if you weren't, he would make you laugh one way or another."

Calling hours run from 2-8 p.m. at the Burlington Flats Baptist Church located at 6007 Route 51 in the village.

Mayne's funeral is being held Tuesday at 11a.m. at Edmeston Central School, and more than 1,000 are expected.

Edmeston Central Superintendent David Rowley says a scholarship has been created to honor Mayne.
