Dolgeville teacher returns from serving overseas

By By MEGAN KOSKOVICH

DOLGEVILLE, N.Y. (WKTV) - We first told you about Frank Engle in 2007 - a social studies teacher at Dolgeville Central School.

His students put on a special assembly for him that year, right before he was sent overseas.

It's been almost two years since we first spoke to Mr. Engle, as he prepared to be deployed to Afghanistan. Now, he's back on U.S. soil and says he couldn't be happier to be back in the classroom at Dolgeville Central School.

He spent about 10 months training Afghan soldiers, and during his time overseas, he says his students sent him letters, e-mails, and the all-important care packages. He says it's an experience that not only changed him personally, but changed the way he teaches his students.

"A lot more hands-on stuff, because obviously, teaching the Afghans, we were going out and running missions," Engle said. "And that was teaching. So, trying to get more hands on stuff with the kids because I realize that the Afghans learned a lot better."

Engle says he sees a lot of his old students in the hallways, all of whom he says made sure to pass on their favorite Engle stories to his new students.
