I know everyone is talking about the potential snow for Saturday but we can't just skip over the rain for tonight and Friday. It is going to happen and we need to focus on moderate rain that is going to move into the region.
First off, a Flood Watch has been issued for all of Central NY from tonight through Saturday. The steady rain begins to move into the area after Midnight and will pick up in intensitiy throughout the day on Friday. Not only are we dealing with rain but also a significant warm up. By Friday morning, temperatures will already be close to 50 and I would not be surprised if some areas to the south of Utica get close to 60 degrees by Friday evening. So the combination of the warmth and the amount of rainfall, flooding and ice jams are a big concern. The water in rivers, creeks and streams could rise several feet by Friday evening and with that rise of water, the ice will begin to break and jam up. Right now, rainfall looks to be between 1"-3" with some areas seeing more than 3" by Friday night.
Now Friday night, once the cold front moves in, temperatures drop dramatically, creating a flash freeze. Any standing water will turn into ice, creating slick road conditions as well as sidewalks, driveways and parking lots. Then precipitation is going to change from rain to sleet and freezing rain. This could be a big deal as ice accumulates Friday night into Saturday morning.
As for snowfall, it is still up in the area as we are 48 hours out. There are still a lot of factors into when we make the change over to snow. As stated above, we are focusing on the flood potential for right now.
