HERKIMER- Roughly eight months ago the Herkimer Diamond Mines lost everything they had after a fire ripped through their gift shop on a windy October night.

“The fire was just one bad day in history,” said Renee Shevat, owner of the Herkimer Diamond Mines.

On Friday, the Mines opened a new phase to their five-phase project. It’s called the Miner’s Village and it will be a new start to history for the Herkimer Diamond Mines.

“There was no second questioning for us,” said Shevat. “We said let's just rebuild.”

Connected to the Herkimer Diamond Mines is the Herkimer Diamond KOA campgrounds, which has been in support of this project since day one.

“Renee called me the day of the fire,” said Michael Gast, KOA Communications Vice President. “Before [the conversation] was over there was no doubt in my mind she would be back on her feet.”

According to Shevat, the finished product will showcase a Rock Hound Academy, Canteen Cafe, and a Trading Post which will offer miners gifts, jewelry, and more.

“We are very excited for what the future holds,” said Shevat. “It is the beginning of something special.”
