ROME –The U.S. military is investigating a crash after a helicopter came into contact with a tower at Griffiss International Airport late Thursday night.

Oneida County 911 first reported an aircraft crash at Griffiss International Airport just after 11 p.m. Thursday night. Multiple agencies were dispatched to the scene. Police had the area around 592 Hanger Road at Griffiss International Airport blocked off well into the night to ensure the security of the area.

Oneida County Executive and Griffiss Airport Commissioner confirmed to NEWSChannel 2 that the helicopter was not flying, but taxiing when it crashed into the tower. Six military personnel were on board the helicopter at the time of the crash. There was one minor injury and that person was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The tower had minimal damage and the helicopter, which is based out of Fort Drum, suffered most of the damage.

Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente said there were no fuel issues or hazardous materials. He added that officials do not believe the cause of the crash is anything of concern.

The airport is back open and operating normally. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
