UTICA, NY – Area 5th and 6th grade boys are hooping it up at the City of Utica’s Dick Miller Christmas Basketball Tournament.
The tournament tipped off Monday at the Parkway Recreation Center.
It features teams of 5th grade boys from New Hartford, Whitesboro and Utica, as well as 6th grade teams from New Hartford and Utica.
This is the second year the tournament has been held.
Martin Flynt, the director of the tournament, says it gives the kids something to do while they’re home from school during the holidays.
“The kids in the area, right after Christmas, they’re on their break. Many of them don’t have the opportunity to go away and a lot of our ballplayers love playing in these tournaments. So this gives them a chance to get some additional ball.”
This year’s tournament is a double elimination tournament so each team will have the chance to play in at least 2 games.
The tournament wraps up on Friday with trophies and plaques being handed out to the first and second place teams.
