BEER BREAD

Vegetable shortening, for pan
3 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 (12-ounce) bottle or can regular or nonalcoholic beer
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter, melted

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease the bottom of a 9x5-inch loaf pan with shortening. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Stir in beer and butter. Transfer to prepared pan. Bake until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean, 45 to 50 minutes. Cool in pan 10 minutes before removing to a wire rack. Serve warm or cooled. Makes 16 servings.
