Decision 2006

It's been two days since Senator John Kerry made a controversial comment to college students in California, and the buzz still hasn't gone away. Kerry has been criticized all over the country for the botched joke, including here in Central New York. Congressional hopeful Ray Meier was among the Republicans lashing out again Senator Kerry's comment.

Here is what Senator Kerry said:

"We're here to talk about education, but I want to say something before. You know education. If you make the most of it; you study hard; you do your homework; and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."

Many assumed he meant if you're not smart, you end up in the U.S. armed forces. However, Kerry has since pointed out he was criticizing the Bush administration's lack of information leading up to the war in Iraq. He misspoke when he said the line.

Here is what Republican Ray Meier had to say about Kerry's comments: "The modern American soldier is educated. Senator Kerry should apologize to our brave men and women in the armed forces."

Mike Arcuri also responded to Senator Kerry's comments by saying, "I think that clearly the troops have been fantastic in terms of the service that they have rendered to this country. We shouldn't take our eye off the ball. The focus is on how do we get our troops home from Iraq? This president is doing everything, but what the American people care about."
