Townsend and Gordon

As elections draw near, it's not uncommon to see the number of political advertisements go up, which usually means tens of thousands of dollars need to be spent. Many candidates don't have that kind of money. So, what do you do? One candidate, running for the 115th state assembly seat, is taking his message to cyberspace.

Dave Gordon has decided to take a new approach to campaign advertising. He's posted a 30 second commercial on "You Tube," which is a popular website for amateur videos and other amazing sights caught on tape.

The spot pokes fun at his opponent, Assemblyman David Townsend. It only costs $350 to make, cost nothing to air-- amounting to far less than what it would cost to put a spot on television.  Cost savings is important to Gordon, especially when you consider, to this point, he's amounted $3,400 in campaign contributions.

"Do i think it's gimmicky? No," says David Gordon. "I think it's an affordable way for people who otherwise have been repressed by the governmental things that just are unacceptable and don't help people win like the gerrymandering of districts."

Meanwhile, Dave Townsend, who beat Gordon in 2004, has recieved more than $70,000 in campaign contributions.  He feels "You Tube" advertising isn't enough. "I think if it was a big way to advertise, you'd see the congressional candidates on "You Tube;" senate candidates on "You Tube;" both national and state, presidential wannabes on "You Tube."

Gordon hopes the add will help boost his name recognition, but he says, if he plans on winning the election this time, he'll have to go door to door and meet the voters individually.
