Surrogate Judge race set between incumbent Gigliotti and challenger Tenney

By ANDREW DONOVAN

UTICA, NY (WKTV) - The November race is set for the Oneida County Surrogate Court judge seat. After Tuesday's primary, the race is set between incumbent Louis Gigliotti (D, I, C) and Claudia Tenney (R).

Louis Gigliotti was sworn is at the Surrogate Court judge in April of 2009, filling the seat vacated by Judge David Murad in 2008 when Murad was elected to the State Supreme Court. Gigliotti was a longtime lawyer in Utica since 1983.

"When you're in private practice, you're a paid advocate; you're advocating one side. What's great about being a judge is you get to hear both sides, both advocates speak, and then try to reach the fairest and most just decision under the law," said Judge Gigliotti.

Challenging Incumbent Gigliotti is Clinton lawyer Claudia Tenney. Tenney's late father, Honorable John Tenney, is a former judge. Tenney has a law degree. She has managed a private law practice and at one time, was chief of staff and legal counsel to Republican Assemblyman Dave Townsend.

"I think really what it comes down to as a judge is you're really just helping someone solve a problem; or a business or a local government or what ever issue comes before your court; it's a problem solving event, it really is," said Tenney.

The race is set for November 3.
