Decision 1984 Backgrounders

In 1984 as Ad Stevenson and I documented the primary campaign of Walter Mondale to win the presidential nomination of his party, we did a piece in each state where we tried to reflect its distinct variations: geography, dialect, and identity.

The idea was that this background would serve as a foundation to understand how a specific regional consensus could develop and have an effect on local voting patterns. Included here is a Northeastern state: New Hampshire, Border South state: Tennessee, Deep South state: Texas, Pacific Coast state: Oregon, and Intermountain West state: Idaho.
