Molter Pilgrimmage and Molter Resupply

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area is a regulated entrance wilderness of interconnected lakes and rivers in northern Minnesota.

It borders the Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario providing a vast opportunity for outdoor adventure. Dorothy Molter was allowed to keep her remote resort on a group of islands in Knife Lake deep in this wilderness after the BWCA was formed.

She was “grandfathered in” due to public pressure. Known as the Root Beer Lady for her homemade brew which she would sell to canoeists, she led an isolated life that was punctuated by countless visitors. She lived in her cabin for 56 years until she died in December of 1986. Two of my favorite stories recount trips to her home, one in May 1981, the other in the depths of winter 1983.
