SAVORY BURGERS

2 pounds lean ground beef
3 tablespoons plain bread crumbs
2 tablespoons minced onion
2 tablespoons minced bell pepper
1 tablespoon ketchup
1 teaspoon prepared yellow mustard
1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon steak seasoning blend, such as Montreal
1/4 teaspoon salt
8 slices American cheese
8 hamburger buns, split
Savory Sauce (optional)
Lettuce leaves (optional)
Tomato slices (optional)

Coat grill rack with nonstick cooking spray. Heat coals or gas grill for direct heat. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, bread crumbs, onion, pepper, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, steak seasoning blend, and salt. Shape into 8 patties, about 3/4-inch thick. Place patties on grill rack 4 to 5 inches from medium heat. Grill until an instant-read thermometer inserted in side of burger registers 160 degrees, 14 to 18 minutes, turning once. Top each burger with a cheese slice during the last 2 minutes of grilling. Spread Savory Sauce on tops and bottoms of split sides of buns; place lettuce leaves on bottoms of buns, if desired. Add burgers. Top with tomato slices, if desired. Makes 8 burgers.
 
SAVORY SAUCE
1/4 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup ketchup
1 1/2 teaspoons prepared yellow mustard
1/2 teaspoon onion powder

In a small bowl, whisk together all ingredients until smooth. Makes 8 servings.
