The Harried Housewife Recipes from Cynthia O'Connor O'Hara


2 (1-ounce) squares semisweet chocolate 

2 cups flour 

1/2 teaspoon baking soda 

1/4 teaspoon salt 

1/2 cup butter, softened 

1 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar 

1 egg 

1 teaspoon vanilla 

1 (8-ounce) carton regular or light sour cream 

Chocolate Frosting (below)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Melt chocolate according to package directions; set aside to cool. In a medium bowl, combine flour, baking soda, and salt. In a large bowl, beat butter with an electric mixer on medium speed for 1 minute. Add brown sugar; beat until combined. Add egg and vanilla; beat until combined. Add melted chocolate; beat until combined. Add sour cream; beat until combined. Gradually beat in as much flour mixture as possible; stir in the rest. Drop by rounded teaspoons 2 inches apart onto ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until edges are firm. Cool 1 minute before removing to wire racks. Cool completely. Spread cookies with Chocolate Frosting. Makes about 4 dozen cookies.



2 1/2 cups confectioners’ sugar, divided 

1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1/4 cup butter, softened 

1/4 cup milk

1 teaspoon vanilla


In a small bowl, combine 1 cup confectioners’ sugar and cocoa powder. In a medium bowl, beat butter with an electric mixer until creamy. Add confectioners’ sugar mixture; beat until combined. Gradually beat in milk and vanilla. Add the remaining 1 1/2 cups confectioners’ sugar; beat until combined.
