COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (WKTV) - A new campaign is underway in Cooperstown to help detect breast cancer earlier.

Friday morning at the Otesaga Hotel, the Friends of Bassett Healthcare Network launched a new program to raise $1.5 million for a women's imaging center at Bassett Medical Center. The project will include the purchase of new equipment with advanced 3D technology to replace aging equipment, as well as increase the space needed for such a center.

Doctors at Bassett say the new equipment will save lives.

"Breast cancer is a disease that is now curable. The cure is based on early detection," said Dr. Caridad Fuertes. "Breast cancer happens here as it does in urban settings and I think that having the latest technology and having a space in which a patient can be comfortable and feel confident that she's getting the best healthcare is important."

The goal of the fundraising campaign by the Friends of Bassett Healthcare Network is $1.5 million.

The fundraising project is expected to last through early next year, with a projected opening date for the new women's imaging center of December 2014.
