New center for wound healing opens in Cooperstown

Story Updated: Apr 5, 2013

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (WKTV) - Millions of people in this country suffer with chronic wounds that won't heal and in New York State alone, 237,000 suffer with diabetic wounds.

One of the most effective treatments for wounds that won't heal is "hyperbaric oxygen therapy," which, until now, has not been available in the area Bassett serves.

The Bassett Healthcare Network has opened a new center near Cooperstown that offers advanced therapies, including hyperbaric oxygen treatments.

In the nine-county region served by Bassett, more than 15,000 people have diabetes and nearly 5,000 people suffer with the pain of non-healing wounds.

"When you have multiple appointments and travel to various places, care isn't always uniform, they may miss some of information and treatments needs," said Dr. Eric Mooney of Bassett. "I think if you are going to one place, where all the sub-specialists are and advanced treatment is, you are more likely to get all of the bases covered and perhaps have a better result."

Mooney notes that the demand for this approach is only going to increase as the elderly and diabetic population in New York State continues to grow.
