HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - Officials from the YWCA Mohawk Valley held a press conference Tuesday morning to acknowledge Child Abuse Prevention and Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

It is estimated that 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will experience sexual abuse by the time they reach the age of 18.

On Tuesday, community leaders and law enforcement officials gathered at Herkimer County Community College to discuss local prevalence and impact of these crimes.

They say there is a lot that can be done to prevent, address and respond to child abuse and sexual assault.

Brenda Plumley is a local artist. She was abused as a child and is using art to share her story in an effort to help others.

"What prompted me is just that, you know, going through it and just having the memories and that nobody had done anything," Plumley said. "The anger in that compels me to speak out."

Every year, 3.3 million reports of child abuse are made in the United States. involving nearly 6 million children.
