School lunches to have more veggies, whole grains

WASHINGTON (AP) - Schoolchildren's favorite lunch - the
ubiquitous frozen pizza - is about to get healthier.

First lady Michelle Obama and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack
are expected to announce today that most school meals will have
less sodium, more whole grains and more fruits and vegetables as
sides.

The popular pizzas will still be on school lunch lines but
made with healthier ingredients.

Mrs. Obama and Vilsack are appearing at an elementary school in
Alexandria, Va., with celebrity chef Rachael Ray.

The new rules represent the first major nutritional overhaul of
school meals in 15 years. They won't be as aggressive as the Obama
administration had hoped.

Congress last year blocked the USDA from making some of the changes the department had sought, including limiting french fries and pizzas.

o.k. then....time to look for lunch boxes for my kids......The government is not going to tell me what to feed my kids.....Maybe the schools need to get rid of vending machines first. They weren't around in my day and should not exist now.

Maybe if they teach the lunch ladys to cook instead of Box, Cans or Frozen food that they now give to the childen to eat .There is noting wrong with cooking for real food the kind grandmas make.

To 4mother.....It makes me wonder how your children's health is now and if they are obese. The schools have been telling your kids what to eat now, why not have the government step in and make it a little healthier? Obviously, you don't care about your children's health!
