Anniversary of Roe vs. Wade

By WKTV News

UTICA N.Y.-(WKTV)Local people on Tuesday quietly reflected on the 40th anniversary of a Supreme Court decision that has divided the nation like few others.

"The way to prevent abortions is to make sure everyone who wants to prevent abortion has access to the information they need to make a decision and secondly have access to birth control so they can prevent an unwanted pregnancy," says Margaret Roberts, Co-President and CEO of Planned Parenthood in Utica.

The clinic is often targeted by right to life advocates for the abortions perfomed on-site. The clinic also offers on-site adoption counseling and reproductive education geared toward preventing the need for abortion.

"The way to prevent abortions is to make sure everyone who wants to prevent abortion has access to the information they need to make a decision and secondly have access to birth control so they can prevent an unwanted pregnancy," says Roberts.

Father Joe Salerno of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in south Utica says he understands and appreciates the complexity of the issue, but in the end, the right to life has to win out over all, including a woman's right to chose.

"I believe the sacredness of life even trumps anyone's choice in this matter," says Salerno, who adds a quick caveat regarding the other side of the abortion issue.

"It's not that they don't see life as sacred. They just see that this is a matter of choice and I'm not sure I can agree with that," says Salerno.
