Former City Comptroller Nelson reacts to Paterson's address

By ANDREW DONOVAN

UTICA - Former City Comptroller Tom Nelson gave his reaction following Governor David Paterson's address to New Yorkers regarding the economy. He said he was impressed with the governor for ensuring that his finances were in order.

Comptroller Nelson also said that it is beneficial that the governor is
starting early with his budget ideas. Typically, it is normal to wait until January when the legislature convenes and then discusses the budget, resulting in missing the budget deadline of April 1.

The plan that will be submitted will have an impact locally. Much of the City's revenues and local school districts' revenues are state funded. Nelson stresses that local leaders will need to address potential issues if funding is cut.

He feels that the governor's plan will impact local agencies possibly including the State Office Building in Utica and local correctional facilities. These local agencies have people who provide services under state employment and could be affected.
