REACTION: Assemblyman Dave Townsend

“I am happy to see Governor Paterson propose action for New York State’s current financial mess,” said Assemblyman David Townsend (R,C,I,WF-Sylvan Beach). “He and his advisors have finally taken some age-old advice to heart: When you’re in a hole, stop digging.

However, an “emergency” session ought to be exactly that; Governor Paterson’s call for a meeting of the Legislature, three weeks hence, to manage a ballooning budget deficit of $6.4 billion – a budget I voted against – somehow lacks the DEFCON-1-type of urgency the Empire State finds herself in. The speech was long on can-do rhetoric, short on solutions.

I have been calling on the Assembly to reconvene for weeks in order to finally solve the issues of sky-high property taxes, spiking gas prices, and the daily food costs draining the wallets of our middle-class families and steadily driving them out of New York. I look forward to seeing Governor Paterson on August 19 – it’s time to get back to work.”
