REACTION: Assemblyman Marc Butler

overnor Paterson made a brief statement today regarding the state of
New York’s economy. He also called for an emergency session to take
place on August 19. Unfortunately, the governor was very vague and did not produce a clear plan. New Yorkers are hurting right now so property taxes, home heating costs and the price of gasoline all need to be addressed. I agree with the governor that our state needs to rein in
spending and that fiscal responsibility is necessary.

First, we need to decide on a property tax plan. Whether it is the property tax cap or the circuit breaker, the Legislature needs to approve a plan that will bring relief to struggling homeowners all across New York.

I am pleased that an emergency session was called and, while in Albany, I will work with the governor and my colleagues in the Senate and the Assembly to produce relief for New Yorkers. I call on my colleagues to work together and not let politics get in the way of helping New York’s hardworking residents.
