Kevin Adams fit to understand charges in death of grandfather

NEW HARTFORD - Kevin Adams, 19, of Clinton is accused of killing his elderly grandfather, Ed Bogan.

The results of two psychiatric exams of Adams are in - Adams and his family were in New Hartford Town Court today to hear the results.

Police say Kevin Adams walked into the New Hartford Police Station January 4, saying that he'd killed someone in Clinton. We now know the victim was the teen's own grandfather, Edward Bogan.

Adams' court proceeding today lasted only three minutes in New Hartford Town Court. His mother, two brothers, and sister were there to support him.

Two doctors who examined Adams found he does not lack the ability, due to a mental disease or defect, to understand the charges against him. But they did diagnose him as paranoid schizophrenic.

"He wasn't functioning properly," said Frank Nebush, public defender. "There are some very unusual and bizarre activities that his family recounts and his friends recount."

Today's findings simply move this case from town court to the county court level.

Next thing to keep an eye out for is a possible indictment, or formal charge, which would bind Adams to stand trial for his grandfather's murder.
