Darnell Howard Trial: "Guilty on all counts" in UPD Officer assault

UTICA - Darnell Howard has been found guilty of second-degree assault for his role in the beating of a Utica Police Officer.

After three days of extensive video and audio evidence and testimony, Howard's trial wrapped up Thursday. While the guilty verdict clearly pleased prosecutors, the defense says Darnell Howard got a raw deal as jurors took very little time to decide he should do hard time.

It was a terrible day for Lorraine Howard, who watched her son Darnell lose the case and have his bail revoked.

"I have a problem with the verdict," said Oscar McKenzie, Howard's lawyer. "I think that even the judge's charge was longer than the time it took them to deliberate...if they did, in fact, deliberate."

During closing arguments, McKenzie said Howard didn't spit on or hit Officer Sabanovic.

Prosecutors countered that Howard not only hit the officer, but his role resulted in head and other injuries. As bad as this was for the Howards, Sabanovic says it's been painful for him too.

"My experience through the trial was nearly as bad as what I encountered on the street," Sabonvic said. "Mr. Howard had plenty of chances to leave. He didn't, and how he has to face the consequences."
