4 firefighters died trying to save lives
HOUSTON (AP) - Houston's fire chief says the four firefighters who died fighting a motel fire today were looking for people they thought were still trapped in the burning building.
Terry Garrison says the firefighters "took the highest amount of risk possible" because they thought there were "civilians in the structure" when the roof collapsed. He says the firefighters "who were trying to save lives were lost."
It's the single worst loss of life for the 118-year-old Houston Fire Department.
Garrison says everyone inside the Southwest Inn on busy U.S. 59 has been accounted for.
The mayor says that of five other firefighters injured, one is in critical condition in an intensive care burn unit.
The blaze broke out just after noon today at a restaurant and club at the motel.
The cause of the fire hasn't been released.
