Hospital worker sentenced for pilfering TV funds

(WKTV) - A former Syracuse hospital worker accused of stealing $900,000 over 11 years from the envelopes of patients buying television and phone service has been sentenced to a year in prison.

Bonnie Simson of Manlius was sentenced Friday. The former manager at St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center in Syracuse had pleaded guilty earlier this year to a federal charge of embezzling from a program receiving federal funds.

The Post-Standard of Syracuse reports that the judge ordered the 43-year-old woman to repay the $900,000 she stole by making monthly payments of at least $250 after she's out of prison.

Simson's lawyer said she was using the money to pay for her severe addiction to pain-killers. Simson, who has been in rehabilitation since her arrest in 2011, apologized in court.
