Adirondack Railroad damaged, out of service
LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (AP) - The locomotive of the Adirondack Scenic Railroad that operates between Lake Placid and Saranac Lake has been damaged.
David Link, director of volunteers at the railroad, tells the Adirondack Daily Enterprise several wires inside the train's electrical cabinet were pulled out, cut and placed back into the cabinet sometime last week.
The railroad crew discovered something was wrong when the train failed to pass a routine safety inspection before going into service last Wednesday, but it took a few days to discover the source of the problem. No damage was detectable from outside the train.
Link tells the paper repairs could cost up to $50,000, not including lost revenue, and calls the damage deliberate.
Federal Railway Administration officials are expected to conduct their own investigation.
