CLINTON, N.Y.(WKTV) - A Clinton man is in jail for allegedly shooting and killing his family dog. Sheriff's deputies say 58-year-old William Richerson shot the Jack Russell Terrier in the basement of his home.

New Hartford Animal Control has taken the deceased animal to conduct an autopsy.

The investigation revealed that Richerson was "emotionally upset" and took the family dog, "Sam," into the basement and shot it with a .22 caliber pistol. The pistol was later found in the basement by his wife and secured by police.

Richerson did not have a license for the pistol.

He was arrested for Aggravated Cruelty of an Animal and Criminal Possession of a Weapon.

He's being held at the Oneida County jail in lieu of $5,000 cash bail, and is expected to appear in Kirkland Town Court on April 26.
