THE VILLAGE OF NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV)- Residents of a senior living apartment complex were forced to evacuate their homes following a fire in New Hartford, on Wednesday night.
The fire at the Sunset Wood Apartments on Genesee Street broke out shortly after 6 p.m. Crews worked quickly to extinguish the flames.
Some residents were sent to a nearby church, which acted as a temporary shelter. The executive director of the facility said 72 residents were evacuated and 14 had to be relocated.
"It's under investigation right now," said Scott Nicotera, assistant chief of the New Hartford Fire Department. "So what we're doing is taking it step-by-step to make sure that number one it's safe for residents and safe for occupancy."
Authorities confirm that four apartments were damaged. New Hartford fire officials say the flames were confined to one bedroom on fourth floor.
One person was taken to the hospital, but there were no serious injuries.
The fire is still under investigation.
