Man found dead in Adirondacks at Marcy Dam

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (AP) - State police say a 36-year-old Saranac Lake man has drowned near Marcy Dam in the Adirondack Mountains.

Troopers say a group of hikers discovered the body of Kevin Benham floating in water near the popular dam on Wednesday afternoon and called 911.

A state police aviation unit flew in forest rangers and a flight nurse from Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake to the scene on Marcy Brook, approximately a quarter-mile north of the dam, which is located 10 miles southeast of Lake Placid.

Resuscitation efforts were initiated and two additional forest rangers were flown in to assist, but rescue efforts were eventually stopped at the direction of medical staff.

An autopsy determined Benham's death was accidental and the cause of death was drowning.
