New Hartford, N.Y (WKTV) - A Chadwicks man suffered minor injuries after he was hit by a car Wednesday morning, New Hartford Police say.

The accident occurred around 5:45 a.m. on Champlain Avenue near the St. Luke's and Utica College intersection. According to officers, Charles D. Schmidt, 52, of Chadwicks was crossing Champlain Avenue walking toward Utica College when he walked into the path of an oncoming vehicle driven by John Reese, 21, of Rome.

Reese struck Schmidt while he was in the middle of the lane, knocking him to the ground. Schmidt was helped by Reese and another motorist, who called 911, police say. Upon investigation, police determined Schmidt was wearing dark-colored clothing and walked into the path of Reese's vehicle on a Do Not Walk signal. Schmidt complained of leg and chest injuries, but was able to walk to St. Luke's emergency room.

Schmidt was ticketed for walking on a steady do not walk sign, and was found to be in possession of an open container of alcohol at the time, authorities said.

Reese was not ticketed.
