Officials say man intentionally drove into a tree

(WKTV) - One person was sent to the hospital following an accident on Route 365 Monday afternoon, where officials say the man intentionally drove into a tree.

An investigation by the Oneida County Sheriff's Office revealed that Rafer Caudill, 45, of Chicago intentionally drove his vehicle into the trees in an attempt to hurt himself.

The accident happened at around 4 p.m. on state Route 365 in the Town of Trenton near Mapledale Road. Emergency crews found the vehicle on its side, against a tree, tangled in live power lines.

Officials said they had to wait for National Grid to shut the power off, before rescuing Caudill.

Caudill was committed to St Elizabeth's Hospital for a mental health evaluation. Caudill was also issued several traffic tickets.
