Passengers of fatal plane crash are from Utica
EPHRATAH, N.Y. (WKTV) - The two passengers of the fatal plane crash are Utica residents, law enforcement officials tell NEWSChannel 2.
Two bodies were recovered from the wreckage Friday night, just hours after the plane crashed in a reservoir, before darkness set in and the search was called off with one person unaccounted for.
Crews spent most of the day Saturday searching for the third victim, thought to be the pilot. The wreckage was nearly 30 feet underwater, according to authorities on the scene.
The crash happened at around 6:00 p.m. Friday. The reservoir is owned by Brookfield Power, an energy company.
Fulton County Sheriff Thomas Lorey says three people were on board. The plane was a Piper PA 34.
The plane originated from Bedford, Massachusetts near Boston and was headed to Griffiss Park in Rome.
Law enforcement officials said most of the Piper PA 34 aircraft was submerged in a large pond in a wooded area.
The plane was affiliated with Angel Flight, a nonprofit group that facilitates volunteer pilots to transport sick patients, according to officials. The pilots in the program volunteer their time.
Larry Camerlin, president and founder of Angel Flight Northeast, said he was "tremendously saddened" by the crash.
The victims' names have not been released by authorities.
The scene is on Route 29, just across from Royal Mountain Campsites.
