COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (WKTV) - City Police in Richmond, Va., confirm the suspect police were looking for in connection to a shots-fired incident that shut down Main Street in Cooperstown for hours just days before Christmas, is in police custody.

Cooperstown Police, New York State Police, and the Otsego County Sheriff's Department all responded to the scene at the 7th Inning Stretch memorabilia store in the village Monday morning after they say Renert walked into the store with a gun, and threatened someone inside the store.

Authorities say the person he threatened, pulled a gun himself and fired shots in self defense.

Renert fled and headed south.

He was picked up Monday night by city police in Richmond, Va.

Investigators from the Otsego County Sheriff's Office and Cooperstown Police Department left for Virginia Monday night to interview Renert.

We expect to learn more from the Otsego County Sheriff's Department about what charges Renert will face, and when he will be extradited back to New York.
