State police make an arrest in Herkimer County dog abuse case

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - New York State Police made an arrest in the dog abuse case involving 12 dogs in the the Town of Herkimer.

Barbara Smith, 65, was arrested and charged with 12 counts of failure to provide sustenance.

She also faces an additional charge, from the town's dog control officer, of 12 counts of having unlicensed dogs and 12 counts of having dogs without rabies vaccinations.

On October 13th, state police were called to her home on state highway 28. They were responding to a complaint of numerous malnourished dogs in the front yard. The dogs were seized and treated for illnesses.

Smith was arraigned at the Herkimer Town Court and released on her own Recognizance. She is due back in court on December 10.
