Victim in Columbia Street Fire Dies

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - A man injured in an early morning fire on Columbia Street in the City of Utica Wednesday has died.

Jeffrey Howarth, 50, of Utica was being treated at the SUNY Health Science Center in Syracuse.

Howarth was one of seven people living in what Utica Fire Chief Russell Brooks describes as a boarding house. All seven made it out of the burning house and the Utica Chapter of the American Red Cross is putting them up in local hotels.

When firefighters arrived on the scene at 914 Columbia Street on the city's west side just after 5:00 Wednesday morning, they found smoke and flames coming from the building and frigid, icy conditions.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
