Girl rescued from Mohawk River in Rome

ROME, N.Y. (WKTV) - Rome firefighters engaged in a dramatic rescue of a 12-year-old girl who was stranded on a piece of driftwood in the Mohawk River Friday night.

The rescue happened at around 6 p.m. behind Staley Jr. High
Fire officials said the girl was caught-up in the river's current and the process of saving her took about 20 minutes.

Firefighters approached the child from a nearby fallen tree, secured her with life ropes, used a personal flotation device and then lifted her to the fallen tree. She was then guided down the fallen tree and then handed to the shoreline crew.

The girl was transported for evaluation and is said to be okay.
