Volunteers go the extra mile to help make Boilermaker go smoothly

By By SUSAN CAMPBELL

UTICA - It is a 15k race but some people are going the extra mile! we are talking about Boilermaker week volunteers. Rain or shine, Boilermaker volunteers are out in full force. In all, about 6,500 people are giving up their time and energy to help the Boilermaker go off without a hitch.

Friday at the Health and Fitness Expo, volunteers were manning all of the tents and stations on the Masonic campus. From handing out those all important race packets, to signing up last-minute five-k runners, to selling boilermaker merchandise, volunteers are making it happen. They say Boilermaker week is one of the highlights of their summer.

"It's fun to be involved in one of the biggest, actually the biggest race in the country and just fun to be involved and see all the people from the Utica area and outside the Utica area," says volunteer Debbie Seymour.

"It's the greatest community feeling in the world, to see everyone in this town and the surrounding area get together like this is just self gratifying," Carol Babowicz said.

It is too late to volunteer for this year's road race but Boilermaker officials are already accepting online applications for next year's big event!
