Local soldiers serving in Iraq hold their own "Boilermaker in Baghdad"

By KRISTEN COPELAND

BAGHDAD - The Boilermaker is going global. Two local soldiers did not want to miss this years race, so they are organizing their own 15k through the streets of Baghdad. Nearly 400 soldiers have committed. The two race directors took some time out of their busy schedule to tell us about boilermaker in Baghdad.

Master Sergeant Jim Carrabba from otsego county and Master Sergeant Jeff Conant from Mohawk have been planning "Boilermaker in Baghdad" for the past couple of weeks.

"Half of it will be on gravel, there's some molded roads it will be a tough run it won't be like running on pavement," says Conant.

That is not the only difference. If you think Central New York temperatures are high, imagine running in the desert.

"I saw the forecast for Sunday and it's supposed to be 113, 114. At the hottest point of the day. We are running at 5am so it will be cooler, probably be 90."

The nearly 400 runners are not worried, water stations are set up through the course. While recruiting for the race, three other local soldiers surfaced. Some looking to get a good race time, others looking to just have fun.

"I'm just looking to run out here and enjoy it. I'm looking for an hour and 20 minutes, anything under an hour and 20. I did it in last year but these are different conditions."
