Boilermaker Officials still investigating chip timing issue

By EVAN WHITE

UTICA - A timing issue left thousands of Boilermaker Road Race runners without their net times earlier this month. Now, Boilermaker officials say they are still looking into the problem.

Race officials think they are getting close to solving the problem. They have been working closely with Leone Timing, the company contracted to time the race.

Runners received "gun-times," and official finishing times, but there was a glitch that wiped out all but a third of the starting times.

The race saw more than 11,000 runners start and 9,800 runners finish. Unfortunately for many, a signal used to time the race was disrupted by an unknown source.

Race officials contacted police, and each of the news outlets covering the race to see if any equipment they used during the race caused the problem. They haven't found the source as of yet.

Currently, the timing company has been going through data from tests conducted a day after the race ended.

Both sides hope to the problem's cause soon.

"This isn't something that we are going to sit here and say in June of '09 'Boy what happened here,'" said Tim Reed, Boilermaker Executive Director. "This is something you have to look into when it's fresh in peoples' minds.."

Reed explained that the same equipment was used in the Subaru Buffalo 4 mile chase 10 days ago without any issues.

Reed expects to know what caused the problem in Utica by August.

Reed says there is a theory that Time Warner's microwave truck, which had never been at the race before may have been involved in the issue.

A test is expected to be scheduled in the coming weeks using race equipment and the truck.
