Rongo Comes from Behind in the Final Mile to Win (2006)

Kenyan Makes Big Push In Final Mile

By Sports WKTV

Making up a 30 yard gap in the final mile, Sammy Rongo of Kenya passed Wilson Kiprotich to win the 2006 Utica Boilermaker Road Race. Rongo ran the 15 Kilometers in an unofficial 43:15.

The lead pack dropped off to a four man run just past the two mile mark. At about the halfway point, Kiprotich of Kenya seemed to enjoy a comfortable lead and was on track to threaten the Boilermaker course record of 42:54. But, Kiprotich faltered in the final mile and Rongo, who was a steady second for most of the race, had enough left to pass Kiprotich on Whitesboro Street.
