24 year old one-time resident dies during Boilermaker

UTICA – One person has died while participating in the 2007 Boilermaker Road Race, public safety officials said.

The victim was Sean O'Neill, 24. He was a one-time resident of the area and graduate of Whitesboro who was currently living in New York City, Public Safety Commissioner Philip Taurisano said.

Taurisano said O'Neill became seriously ill on the course near the entrance of Utica College on Burrstone Road This is roughly the 6-mile mark of the Boilermaker route.

He was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital from the Boilermaker course.

It is the fourth Boilermaker-related death in three decades.

An autopsy will be performed Monday morning.
