93-year-old wishes Boilermaker runners luck, in his own way

By WKTV News

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Boilermaker is an exciting time for everyone, but this year, one gentleman at Preswick Glen is making it a little extra special.

Harold Hanes is 93 and has been painting his whole life. His latest project is painting 250 rocks as good luck charms for Boilermaker runners.

"It makes me feel good," said Hanes.

They'll be handed out at the Mohawk Valley Community College on Saturday at a pasta dinner when runners congregate to carbo-load before the big race.

Harold has been painting them for months and says he's happy to do it.

"I have the time to do it and it gives me something to do," he said.

Cindy Dardano works at Preswick Glen and coordinates the pasta dinner. She asked Harold if he was up for the project and he didn't hesitate.

"I think it's great because the Boilermaker, everyone thinks it's just for young athletes, but the Boilermaker isn't and like I said, I had school children involved and now I have Harold who is 93," said Dardano. "I think it's great to have this intergenerational experience."

All of the proceeds from the pasta dinner will go to United Way, which has an initiative in place to help flood victims.
