Local pharmicist pulling recalled children's medications

The Food and Drug Administration is praising the decision by drug makers to pull cold medicines made for babies and toddlers off the shelves.

An FDA review concluded that very young children shouldn't take cold medicine.

The pulled infant cough and cold medicines come in dropper form. Because we're talking about infants, most call for a dose of .08 millilieters, which is based on the baby's weght. But some parents were giving out far more than that.

"Someone instead of using the dropper that came with the medication... they'll grab their teaspoon out of the draw and give their child five times the dose without knowing it," said Jim Femia, a pharmacist who owns Parkway Drugs in Utica. "And you do that over a day or two and serious problems happen."

He received a letter early Thursday asking him to pull the drugs from his shelf. Femia said he is a father, so he knows how hectic it is to be a parent, especially if a child is sick.

"If we can eliminate one, then lets do it, but I would not place the blame on anyone," Femia said.

Next week, an FDA panel will consider whether to change dosing instructions on children's medications; something Femia thinks will happen.

"I just think what is going to happen is they will probably make these items prescription items...where you are following directions on label just like a regular medication that wont eliminate all errors, but it sure would help," Femia said.
