Stores run specials to tie-in with economic stimulus spending

By KRISTEN COPELAND

Many will soon see an economic stimulus payment from the government, and 130 million American households received the extra funds Monday.

How will you spend the free money?

Everyone has to eat. And Chanatry's Market in Utica is adding to your economic stimulus check. If you bring in a $300 government rebate and buy a gift card, the store will tack on $20 extra.

"We're a fixed income community," said Mark Chanatry, owner. "And a lot of people have a difficult time here in Upstate New York. And we feel if we do our part give them a little bit extra, we'll do that."

Store owners say that way you're not only helping the nations economy, but the local economy as well.

The Home Depot has some ideas of its own.

"Take a short term energy stimulus and turn it into a long term investment," said Kenneth Harvey of The Home Depot.

With the nation in 'Go Green' mode, and the economy slipping, Home Depot managers say to spend your money on energy efficient products.

"Because of the high energy costs we incur today, you will definitely see a reduction in your energy costs," Harvey said.

The Home Depot will launch a national advertising campaign aimed at spending your economic stimulus check in its stores. And don't be surprised if you see other companies follow suit.
