Good portion of Mohawk Valley affected by Digoxin recall

By PAT BAILEY

A major heart medicine recall, two weeks ago, ended up affecting a good portion of the Mohawk Valley.

One area drug store says they had several hundred people who were prescribed the drug, but fortunately, they did not see any signs of serious complications.

Jim Femia, of Parkway Drugs, says the Class 1 recall meant the company who made the generic version of Digoxin, in this case Digetek, was unsure which pills may have contained twice the approved level of Digoxin.

Femia says he believes none of the pills Parkway Drugs were supplying, were more than that prescribed dosage.

Femia says on the April 26 he opened the store, and immediately started fielding dozens of calls from people who saw the recall in the morning's paper.

However, at that point Femia says he was unaware of the recall, but knew a little bit about the drug. He says the drug dosage is backed by blood work, so people who take the drug regularly give blood work, and the level of Digoxin then shows up in that screening.

Femia says he alerted his customers of that, and by Monday of that week the problem was solved.

"We had gotten a hold of all our customers, we had re-ordered another generic company," he said. "And by Monday we had all our customers called and told to bring back the stock and we would replace what they had in their bottles at that time."

Femia says that morning one of his pharmacist's called the 3 or 4 page long directory of every customer they had who uses Digoxin.

He says after about 5 hours, everyone was alerted, and their prescriptions were re-filled with the new generic drug that Monday.
