Wine ice cream becomes legal for sale in New York State

By By JOLEEN FERRIS

UTICA -You'll need valid proof that you're over 21 to buy this kind of ice cream.

Senator Joe Griffo supported legislation and Governor Paterson signed it into law, legalizing the sale in New York State of ice cream made with wine.

Mercer's Dairy makes the product right in Boonville. But until now, they couldn't legally sell it in their own state. Owners say they can't wait for it to take off in their own backyard.

If wine ice cream's popularity in other countries is any indication, it will be a hot seller.

"It does extremely well overseas," said Roxaina Hulburt, director of Marketing for Mercer's. "We do extremely well in the Netherlands. If you fly into the airport in the Netherlands, there's a banner hanging in the food court that says Mercer's Ice Cream and shows our wine ice cream in the Netherlands."

Mercer's wine ice cream comes in five different flavors and is available locally at Chanatry's on French Road.
