Owning a trampoline could 'bounce' you from your insurance company

(WKTV) - Kids think they're nice, but some insurance carriers think they're naughty. It's one big-ticket toy your carrier could 'bounce' you for owning.

"Trampolines promote injuries; injuries promote lawsuits; insurance companies don't want a lawsuit," says Scott Rowan of The Rowan Group in Whitesboro.

Broken bones, lost teeth, head injuries.....all are concerns for some house insurance carriers. How large of a concern - and how the carrier handles it - depends on the carrier.

"Some carriers just don't even consider them as an underwriting concern; some carriers just literally will not write you if you have one," says Rowan.

Some insurance carriers handle the problem by asking clients who own trampolines to sign an exclusion, which states the carrier will not cover any claims stemming from injuries suffered on the trampoline.

So, what if you own a trampoline but never thought to call your insurance agent?

Should you call now?

At least one agent says, 'yes'.

"I can tell you that as an insurance agent, I would appreciate it if my customers did; I would more proactively try to help them, if they're going to have a trampoline, what's the safest way to go around it."
