UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Some people are getting a flyer in the mail regarding property deeds, but knowing that you don't need a copy this document will save you some money.

A company is sending out solicitations to homeowners saying you need to purchase a certified copy of your property deed - that costs $59, and a second copy will run you $19.

You don't need to be spending the money and risk having your credit card and other personal information circulating.

According to a local attorney, once your deed is recorded with the county clerk, you are the official owner of your property.

"A certified copy of a deed is really, very rarely ever requested or needed," said Attorney Mark Wolber. "The evidence of ownership of your home is your original deed. And once that's recorded in the county clerk's office, that is your evidence of ownership, even if you lose your original deed. Once it's recorded, it's official notice that you are the owner of that property."

This may be a good time to call your county clerk's office and make sure your deed is recorded under your name.
