Some local shops see increased sales on Black Friday Weekend

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - Between Black Friday and Small Business Saturday this past weekend, some local stores say they saw big sales.

The Old Wicker Mill in the New Hartford Shopping Center reported increased sales compared to the same weekend last year.

"We were a little bit concerned with a lot of the stores opening Thanksgiving evening," said Laura Misiaszek, owner of The Old Wicker Mill. "We were worried it would reduce the traffic flow throughout the weekend, but it really didn't."

The Village Toy Shop, also in the New Hartford Shopping Center, experienced similar success.

"This is where we do the bulk of our sales and we look forward to it," said Jane Willis, owner of the Village Toy Shop.

The shop owners said they believe the economy is gaining momentum and more people are choosing to spend their money with local businesses.

"I think people want to shop small and I think that's really coming through and that's what our customers tell us when they come in," said Willis.

"They want customer service," said Misiaszek. Most of the owners are right here in the store and I think our customers like that. Park in front of the store and there are no great crowds to fight. It's just a little more relaxing.

Both owners said they hope this weekend is the kick-off to a very merry holiday season.
